Dear parents/carers,

Welcome back to St Helen’s and a warm welcome to Year One. The Year One team are so pleased with how the children have settled into class and it is lovely to see such happy faces after the holidays. We will be continuing the children’s learning journey with lots of purposeful play, exploration and more focused learning activities. Please see the curriculum overview for more details.

The Year One team Mrs Kent and I will be sharing the Year One class with the support of Miss Jennings and Mrs Marlow. Mrs Kent will work Monday and Tuesday and I will work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I will be having planning time on a Friday afternoon which will be covered by Ms Hawkins. After half term my planning time will be on a Thursday morning and will be covered by Mr Waldron who will take the children for PE. Please feel free to pop in and talk to any member of the team if there is anything you need support or help with.

Morning routines The morning routines are very similar to that of Reception Class whereby we encourage the children to be independent and hang up their own coats, bags, put away any book bags and water bottles. Please can we ask that the reading diaries are placed in the basket for easy access and you sign the ‘Going Home’ book if someone other than yourselves is collecting your child from school.

Seesaw In Year One the children will transition from ‘Tapestry’ to ‘Seesaw’. This APP is similar to Tapestry with the aim of recording, communicating and celebrating the children’s learning. A letter will go home shortly asking for your consent and for you to log in with your details.

PE PE days for the first half term are Monday afternoon and will then move to Thursday mornings after half term. The children will need their PE kit in school on these days and will get changed within the lesson.

We will also be doing a great deal of work in our Wild Wilderness area so please ensure your child is sent in with a pair of wellington boots.

Reading In order that children gain a love for reading, daily practise is very much encouraged. The children should all now have their school reading books and can change these daily if needed. Please feel free to support them with this as part of the morning routine. Your child will be listened to every day through either a guided phonic groups, group reading, whole class guided reading or individual reading. If you would like to come in and listen to children read, please feel free to come and speak to someone in the team.

Home Learning Home learning will be sent home every Monday in their purple books. Please ensure that the homework book is bought back into school the following Monday.

We are all looking forward to teaching your children in Year One. Please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the team if you have any queries or concerns.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Mrs Brookes and Mrs Kent
